Fallout: Season 1
April 10, 2024 on Prime Video
Amazon's 2024 adaptation of the Bethesda game franchise is that rarest of things: a video game adaptation that respects the source material while telling an original story. Set in the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout, the series follows three characters whose paths converge across the irradiated ruins of Los Angeles: Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), a vault dweller who emerges into the wasteland to find her kidnapped father; Maximus (Aaron Moten), a Brotherhood of Steel initiate whose ideals are tested by the reality of the organization he serves; and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), a centuries-old bounty hunter who was a Hollywood actor before the bombs fell. The show captures the games' signature tonal balance, 1950s retro-futurism grafted onto nuclear horror, and explores the same themes of corporate malfeasance, human survival, and the question of whether the world deserved what it got. Creators Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet understand that Fallout was never about the war; it was about what came after.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The best video game adaptation since The Last of Us, and arguably the most faithful to the spirit of its source. The three-protagonist structure keeps the story moving, Goggins is extraordinary as the Ghoul, and the show's production design captures the games' retro-futurism perfectly. The mystery of who started the war is handled with restraint, and the tone, darkly funny without becoming parodic, is the show's strongest achievement.
