Sherlock Holmes
December 23, 2009 in theaters
Guy Ritchie's 2009 reimagining strips away the deerstalker and pipe, recasting Arthur Conan Doyle's detective as a bare-knuckle brawler with a razor-sharp mind. Robert Downey Jr. plays Holmes as a chaotic genius who fights as brilliantly as he deduces, while Jude Law's Dr. Watson is no sidekick but a war-hardened equal. The plot threads Victorian occult conspiracy through a string of ritualistic murders masterminded by Lord Blackwood, a plot that feels more pulp adventure than classic mystery. Ritchie's kinetic direction, with its street-level grit and slow-motion bare-knuckle bouts, was divisive among purists but proved that Holmes could flex as an action franchise. The chemistry between Downey and Law is the engine that makes it work, turning the familiar detective duo into something fresh enough to earn a sequel and a lasting fanbase.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Ritchie's boldest trick is making Holmes feel dangerous rather than merely clever. The action-mystery hybrid alienated Doyle purists, but Downey and Law's chemistry is strong enough to carry the franchise. The Blackwood plot is thinner than it thinks it is, yet the film's energy, production design, and fight choreography make it a genuinely entertaining reinvention rather than a gimmick.
