There's Something About Mary is the Farrelly brothers' 1998 comedy that turned shock humor into a box-office phenomenon: Ted (Ben Stiller) hires a sleazy private detective to track down his long-lost prom date, Mary (Cameron Diaz), and quickly discovers he isn't the only man competing for her. Diaz's warmth keeps the escalating chaos grounded while the set pieces pushed R-rated comedy to new mainstream heights. In Comedy Legends it stands as the definitive example of a gross-out comedy that conquered America.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The Farrelly brothers perfected the gross-out romantic comedy, balancing outrageous, boundary-pushing slapstick with genuine romantic sweet-heartedness. Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz share flawless comedic timing amidst an unforgettable gauntlet of cringe-inducing gags. It stands as a hilarious landmark of late-1990s comedy culture that still yields big laughs.
