Log in to save

After a sudden emergency forces his crew to evacuate Mars without him, botanist and astronaut Mark Watney must figure out how to survive alone on a hostile planet with limited supplies and no way to contact Earth. Ridley Scott's 2015 adaptation of Andy Weir's novel is an optimistic, problem-solving survival story that makes science feel genuinely thrilling.

THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

The Martian is the rare big-budget sci-fi film that trusts its audience to follow the science and rewards them for it -- every solution Watney engineers feels earned rather than convenient. Matt Damon brings exactly the right combination of competence and dry wit to keep a one-man survival story from feeling claustrophobic. It's Ridley Scott at his most crowd-pleasing, and that's not a criticism -- it's one of the most purely enjoyable films in the Sci-Fi Worlds collection.
