THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

Jean-Claude Van Damme launched his stardom in this lean, unapologetically cheesy martial arts classic about the illegal Kumite tournament in Hong Kong. What it lacks in cinematic sophistication, it more than makes up for with iconic fight choreography, Bolo Yeung's menacing villainy, and sheer 1980s machismo. It is an essential, highly entertaining pillar of martial arts action cinema.
