Galaxy Quest
December 25, 1999 in theaters
For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA Protector — Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, Lieutenant Tawny Madison, and Doctor Lazarus — set off on a thrilling and often dangerous mission in space... until their series was cancelled! Now, twenty years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest television transmissions for "historical documents" and beam up the crew of has-been actors to save the universe. With no script, no director, and no clue, the actors must turn in the performances of their lives.

Sigourney Weaver ad-libbed many of her character's most memorable moments, particularly her increasingly exasperated commentary on the plot's absurdity.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The best Star Trek film ever made, technically. Dean Parisot's affectionate deconstruction of convention-circuit sci-fi fandom earns every laugh without a single moment of mean-spiritedness -- the fans who believe are the heroes, the show-within-the-show cast are deeply human rather than objects of mockery, and the film's third act is a genuinely exciting space adventure. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tony Shalhoub are operating at maximum ensemble chemistry, and the screenplay by David Howard and Robert Gordon is a masterwork of comedic structure.
