Romancing the Stone
March 30, 1984 in theaters
Though she can spin wild tales of passionate romance, novelist Joan Wilder has no life of her own. Then one day adventure comes her way in the form of a mysterious package. It turns out that the parcel is the ransom she'll need to free her abducted sister, so Joan flies to South America to hand it over. But she gets on the wrong bus and winds up hopelessly stranded in the jungle.

"I'm a romance novelist, not an adventurer."
DID YOU KNOW?
Michael Douglas initially struggled to get the film made -- he spent years developing it before Robert Zemeckis agreed to direct, reportedly because his Back to the Future pitch was rejected and he needed a project.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The film that relaunched Michael Douglas as an action-comedy lead and established Kathleen Turner as one of the decade's great screen presences -- a jungle adventure that is smarter and funnier than the Raiders of the Lost Ark template it borrows from. Robert Zemeckis shoots the Colombian locations with genuine energy, the chemistry between Douglas and Turner is real and building from the first frame, and the script by Diane Thomas earns every bit of its reputation as one of the great original adventure screenplays of the 1980s.
