Cloak & Dagger
June 1, 1984 in theaters
Davey Osborne is an average 11-year-old boy with an overactive imagination. He spends his days playing video games and pretending to be a spy with his imaginary father-figure, Jack Flack - a substitute for his real father, who is struggling with the recent death of Davey's mother. However, fantasy becomes reality for Davey after he witnesses the murder of an FBI agent, who in his dying breath, gives Davey a mysterious video game cartridge called Cloak & Dagger, which in actuality contains top-secret government information. With the help of his younger friend Kim, the tech savvy Morris, and even a little help from his fictional secret agent mentor, Davey must stay one step ahead of pursuers as he tries to survive a real-life game of espionage in the streets of San Antonio, Texas.

Dabney Coleman plays two distinct roles -- Davey's real, distant father and the idealized imaginary spy Jack Flack -- a dual casting that was central to the film's concept from the very first draft.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A genuinely underrated 1984 thriller that uses a child's inability to be believed as its central dramatic engine -- Henry Thomas plays Davey, a lonely kid whose only friend is an imaginary spy named Jack Flack, and the film earns its tension by making the fantasy and the real danger feel equally credible. Dabney Coleman pulls double duty as both Davey's unavailable father and the idealized Jack Flack persona, a piece of casting that pays off beautifully in the film's emotional climax. Leaner and smarter than most 80s kid-adventure films.
