DID YOU KNOW?
The film was plagued during production by concerns from Disney executives who felt it was too dark for a children's film. Murch resisted pressure to lighten it substantially.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
One of the genuinely unsettling children's films Hollywood ever produced -- a direct sequel to The Wizard of Oz that leans into L. Frank Baum's darker source material and refuses to soften it. Fairuza Balk is extraordinary as Dorothy, the Wheelers are nightmare fuel in the best possible sense, and the Nome King's transformation sequence remains one of the most disturbing things ever shown in a G-rated film. It failed commercially and has never been properly appreciated as the singular, strange achievement it is.
