THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Steven Spielberg produced this quiet, gentle fable about small mechanical aliens who come to the aid of a New York City tenement building's last remaining tenants -- and it is more emotionally effective than its premise has any right to be. Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy ground the film in something real, and director Matthew Robbins resists the urge to accelerate into spectacle. It is a film about people who have nowhere else to go finding that the universe sends help anyway.
