THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Tombstone is the kind of Western that works because it commits to the ensemble rather than centering everything on a single hero — Kurt Russell's Wyatt Earp is steady and commanding, but the film gives Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, and Powers Boothe real room to breathe. Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday is the electric center of gravity that every scene tilts toward, but the film earns that by surrounding him with characters worth tilting toward. It has been rewatched for thirty years because nearly every scene has a memorable line, a memorable image, or both. One of the defining modern Westerns of its generation.
