THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Real Genius earns its reputation on the strength of Val Kilmer's comic performance — a character who weaponizes brilliance as a coping mechanism and warms up slowly in ways that feel earned rather than scripted. Martha Coolidge keeps the film's tone light without letting it become a farce, and the ensemble around Kilmer is smart enough to hold its own. The film's underlying argument — that intellect without conscience is dangerous — lands without ever becoming preachy. It works better than most of its era because it actually likes its characters.
