THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A modern action classic that arrived with fully-formed world-building and a stunning commitment to practical choreography that changed what audiences expected from the genre. Keanu Reeves delivers a performance built on physicality and grief, making a retired assassin's rampage feel earned rather than cartoonish. The film's economy of storytelling — establish the world, establish the loss, never stop moving — turned what could have been a generic thriller into something genuinely iconic. Everything that followed in the franchise, and much of the action cinema that followed in Hollywood, exists in its debt.
