THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Universal's attempt to launch a shared monster universe begins and ends here, undone by a fundamental tension between the Tom Cruise action-hero playbook and the darker mythology Sofia Boutella's genuinely unsettling Ahmanet deserved. The film can't decide what it wants to be — a breezy chase thriller, a horror origin story, or a franchise table-setter — and cycles through all three modes without fully committing to any. There's enough craft on screen to make the failure interesting, and Boutella is worth watching even when the script isn't. It's a cautionary monument to franchise-first thinking and earns its place in the catalog as exactly that.
