THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The original live-action Mortal Kombat is joyfully committed to its own mythology — a campy, kinetic tournament film that understood the assignment better than most video game adaptations of its era. Robin Shou brings genuine physicality to Liu Kang, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's Shang Tsung remains one of the most effectively menacing villains the franchise has ever produced. It doesn't ask to be taken seriously on a cinematic level, but it delivers exactly what fans of the game were hoping for in 1995. For the OTHERverse, this is the origin point of one of live-action gaming's most durable theatrical lineages.
