THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The darkest Bond film until Casino Royale -- a revenge thriller that strips away the franchise machinery and asks whether Bond's particular skill set can carry a story defined by personal stakes rather than global ones. Dalton is the best he's been in the role, and Robert Davi's drug lord villain is more credibly menacing than most. It was rejected by audiences at the time as too grim; subsequent Bond history has been kinder to it.
