THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Timothy Dalton's debut recasts Bond as a harder-edged, less ironic figure, and the tonal shift is mostly welcome. The film is more committed to Cold War geopolitics than anything since the early Connery era, and Dalton's physical intensity suits the material. Maryam d'Abo is underwritten but credible as a romantic lead. A relaunch that succeeded as a course correction and pointed toward the Craig era's sensibility decades before it arrived.
