THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

The franchise's first real test of whether bigger necessarily means better, and the answer is equivocal. The underwater sequences are visually distinctive and technically ambitious for their era, but the pacing suffers under their weight. Connery is characteristically assured, and the SPECTRE jet-pack opening remains one of the series' most audacious pre-title sequences. A film that established the franchise's appetite for scale without entirely justifying it.
