THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Widely considered the best of the Connery era, and the argument is strong. The film is more genuinely spy-like than most of the series -- the chess tournament opening, the SPECTRE briefing, the Orient Express sequences -- and the relative restraint gives it a weight the gadget-heavy later films rarely achieve. Connery is at his most watchful and least performative. A film that takes its genre seriously without becoming ponderous.
