THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The first and most complete of the Narnia adaptations -- a film that understood the source material's combination of childhood wonder and genuine moral stakes and translated both without condescension. Tilda Swinton's White Witch is the franchise's defining performance, and the Aslan sequences are handled with more restraint and emotional weight than the production's scale might have encouraged. The battle sequences are well-staged without overwhelming the quieter register that makes the film's emotional conclusion land. A faithful and affecting adaptation.
