In 1926, Newt Scamander arrives at the Magical Congress of the United States of America with a magically expanded briefcase, which houses a number of dangerous creatures and their habitats. When the creatures escape from the briefcase, it sends the American wizarding authorities after Newt, and threatens to strain even further the state of magical and non-magical relations.

A confident expansion into the wider wizarding world that succeeds on the strength of its 1920s New York setting and Eddie Redmayne's appealingly eccentric lead performance. The film is at its best when it follows Newt and his creatures rather than the political conspiracy subplot that becomes increasingly dominant. The Obscurus mythology is genuinely interesting and suggests a darker direction the franchise only partially pursued. A charming start weighed down by franchise machinery it hadn't yet earned.
