DID YOU KNOW?
Kenneth Branagh was cast as Gilderoy Lockhart partly because J.K. Rowling had specifically imagined him in the role.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The second film is the most faithful to its source novel and, for many viewers, the most formulaic. The template is identical to the first -- mystery, Hogwarts, revelation -- and the film follows it without deviation. Kenneth Branagh's Gilderoy Lockhart is an inspired casting choice and the film's best element. Competent and satisfying on its own terms, but unmistakably a film that is building toward something rather than standing alone.
