Eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is assigned to mentor a tribute from District 12 in the 10th Hunger Games — a contest still in its brutal, underproduced infancy — and the experience begins shaping the calculating tyrant he will become. The prequel traces the philosophical and emotional origins of Snow’s cruelty.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A prequel that takes a genuine dramatic risk by asking audiences to invest in the origin story of the series' most effective villain. The film is most compelling when it allows young Snow to be morally comprehensible rather than simply corrupt -- the corruption is the story. Tom Blyth's performance is carefully calibrated, and the Appalachian sequences have an atmosphere the main series never quite found. Better than the concept suggested, and more honest about its protagonist than prequels usually dare to be.
