THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A film that demonstrates how well the Transformers franchise works when scaled down -- a smaller, more character-centered story that understands the emotional core of the property and builds around it rather than burying it in spectacle. Hailee Steinfeld's Charlie is the first genuinely developed human protagonist in the series, and the 1980s setting gives the production design a warmth the franchise had never previously found. A prequel-reboot that arrived too late to redirect the franchise but made its case clearly.
