Shrek Forever After
May 21, 2010 in theaters
A midlife-crisis burdened Shrek, longing for the days when he felt like a real ogre, makes a pact with magic deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin. But when he's duped and sent to a twisted version of Far Far Away—where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona have never met—he sets out to restore his world and reclaim his true love.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A more focused final entry than its predecessor -- the It's a Wonderful Life structure gives the film a genuine premise, and the alternate-timeline Fiona is the most interesting version of the character the series produced. The emotional resolution is earned in a way Shrek the Third's wasn't. Not a return to the heights of the first two films, but a respectful and reasonably satisfying conclusion for a franchise that had run its course.
