It ain't easy bein' green -- especially if you're a likable (albeit smelly) ogre named Shrek. On a mission to retrieve a gorgeous princess from the clutches of a fire-breathing dragon, Shrek teams up with an unlikely compatriot -- a wisecracking donkey.

DID YOU KNOW?
Shrek was originally going to be traditionally animated -- the switch to CGI happened when Jeffrey Katzenberg saw what technology could do.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
One of the more complete reinventions in mainstream animation -- a film that subverted the fairy-tale formula so thoroughly that the subversion itself became the formula, but earned that position by executing it with genuine wit and warmth. The vocal performances are exactly right, the DreamWorks-versus-Disney undercurrent gives the satire an edge, and the film's actual emotional investment in its central relationship is real. A film that became more influential than anyone could have predicted and better than most of its imitators ever managed.
