THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The franchise's attempt to leave the time-travel structure behind and tell the post-apocalyptic war story that the earlier films only hinted at. The concept is sound and the production design is genuinely striking, but the execution is uneven -- Christian Bale's John Connor is written as an icon rather than a person, and the film never quite finds its emotional center. An interesting experiment in expanding the mythology that doesn't fully justify its own existence.
