The film draws heavily on classic war films including Apocalypse Now and The Great Escape.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A somber, elegiac conclusion that is more interested in grief and endurance than in action. The film draws deliberately on prisoner-of-war films and biblical imagery, and the tone is consistently heavy -- this is not blockbuster entertainment in any conventional sense. Serkis's Caesar is given a proper dramatic conclusion, and the film earns its emotional weight. More ambitious than crowd-pleasing, and better for it.
