THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The franchise at its most stylized and least realistic, and also its most purely entertaining as a piece of Cold War mythology. Ivan Drago is less a character than an opposing symbol, the training montage is the form's apotheosis, and the film makes no pretense at subtlety. It works entirely on its own terms, which are operatic and cartoonish in roughly equal measure. A film that understood exactly what its audience wanted in 1985 and delivered it without reservation.
