THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The weakest entry in the original series -- an attempt to return the franchise to its street-level roots that misjudges what made those roots compelling. The Tommy Gunn subplot is the least interesting variation the series attempted, and the street-fight finale feels like a concession to formula rather than an earned conclusion. Talia Shire and Burt Young do what they can. A film that wanted to be a corrective and ended up as an endpoint, at least until Rocky Balboa proved otherwise.
