THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The franchise's most ambitious structural gamble -- the opening half of a larger finale that asks audiences to invest in a story deliberately left unresolved. The set pieces maintain the series' extraordinary practical standard, including a train sequence that earns its extended runtime. The AI-as-antagonist concept is handled with more conceptual seriousness than the genre usually affords. Part One is a confident and serious piece of filmmaking on its own terms.
