May 15, 2011 in theaters
Jack Sparrow is drawn into a treacherous race to find the Fountain of Youth, competing against the legendary pirate Blackbeard and a Spanish armada while navigating a complicated reunion with a woman from his past. The fourth film in the franchise separates from Will and Elizabeth’s story and leans into myth and maritime horror.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A soft reboot that strips back the ensemble in favor of Jack Sparrow as the primary protagonist, which reveals that the character works best in contrast rather than as a center of gravity. Penelope Cruz is a welcome addition, and Ian McShane's Blackbeard is a credible screen presence. But the film is noticeably less inventive than its predecessors, and the mermaid mythology, while visually distinctive, is underdeveloped. A franchise running on momentum more than inspiration.
