THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A sequel that expands the mythology at the cost of the original's economy. The Davy Jones design and the Kraken are the franchise's most impressive visual achievements, and Bill Nighy's performance through heavy effects work is legitimately remarkable. The film is two and a half hours of setup for a third entry, which is both its purpose and its limitation. Ambitious in production and frustrating in structure, but the ambition is real.
