The Mummy
April 16, 1999 in theaters
Dashing legionnaire Rick O'Connell stumbles upon the hidden ruins of Hamunaptra while in the midst of a battle to claim the area in 1920s Egypt. It has been over three thousand years since former High Priest Imhotep suffered a fate worse than death as a punishment for a forbidden love—along with a curse that guarantees eternal doom upon the world if he is ever awoken.

Brendan Fraser did most of his own stunt work, which contributed to years of physical injuries he later spoke about publicly.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A reliably entertaining adventure-comedy hybrid that understood its tonal register -- pulpy, warm, and slightly tongue-in-cheek -- and executed it well. Brendan Fraser's Rick O'Connell is one of the better genre leads of its era, and Rachel Weisz brings a genuine intelligence to a role that could have been purely decorative. The CGI has dated, but the film's investment in character and atmosphere has not. A summer blockbuster that aged better than expected.
