THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
A legacy sequel that takes a different tonal approach than the original -- more earnest, more emotional, more deliberately nostalgic -- and largely succeeds on those terms. Mckenna Grace's Phoebe is the most compelling new character the franchise has produced, and the film's respect for the original mythology is evident without being suffocating. The final act crosses into fan service territory, but it works emotionally because the film has treated the original mythology with care. A sequel that understood what the franchise meant to its audience and built from that understanding.
