THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

Darker in tone and more feverish in pacing than its predecessor, Temple of Doom deliberately unsettles rather than delights. The Thuggee cult sequences are genuinely disturbing for a franchise aimed at wide audiences, and some elements have aged poorly. But Ford remains magnetic and the action sequences -- particularly the mine cart chase -- are pure kinetic craft. A flawed but fascinating detour in a franchise rarely content to repeat itself.
