THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The film that launched a franchise and defined an era of blockbuster adventure. Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones is one of cinema's great screen creations -- simultaneously heroic and fallible, learned and reckless, charming and gruff. Spielberg orchestrates the action with a pure sense of fun that never feels cheap, and the mythology of the Ark carries genuine biblical menace. Forty-plus years on, it remains the gold standard for cinematic adventure.
