After a police chase with an otherworldly being, a New York City cop is recruited as an agent in a top-secret organization established to monitor and police alien activity on Earth: the Men in Black. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones established a generational pairing -- the irreverent rookie and the exhausted veteran -- that gave the alien-policing premise a human center. The creature design is inventive and the film moves at exactly the right pace for what it is. A blockbuster that understood its own tone and stayed in it.
