DID YOU KNOW?
Kevin Feige had only two conditions for the show: the original 1992 voice cast had to return, and the iconic theme song had to be licensed.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
X-Men '97 announced itself as a nostalgia project and quietly became one of the best Marvel productions in years. The animation is reverent to its source while being technically accomplished in its own right, and the writers treat the X-Men mythology with a seriousness that the live-action films rarely sustained. Episode five's Genosha sequence lands as one of the most emotionally devastating single episodes in the franchise's history — animated or otherwise. The season handles grief, identity, and systemic oppression with a confidence that makes the superhero stakes feel genuinely meaningful. A benchmark for what adaptation can do when it trusts the source material.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
X-Men '97 — Season 1 continues Marvel's animated X-Men legacy, extending the mutant team's story outside the main live-action MCU timeline. It connects classic character conflicts, prejudice, team loyalty, and superhero responsibility with a style rooted in the earlier animated series. Its placement helps viewers separate this animated continuity from Fox's film era and the MCU's evolving mutant future.
