THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Madame Web is a structurally incoherent film that struggles to articulate what kind of story it wants to tell. Dakota Johnson performs with a flat affect that reads either as deadpan commitment or genuine bewilderment, and the clairvoyance mechanics shift too freely to function as consistent plot logic. The three young characters introduced as the next generation of Spider-Women are thinly established, and the antagonist's motivation never develops beyond the mechanics of the vision he needs to prevent. It is not aggressively bad so much as persistently unclear, which in some ways is the harder quality to forgive.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Madame Web sits in Sony's Spider-Man-adjacent live-action universe, a branch that explores characters connected to Spider-Man mythology outside the core MCU path. It connects antiheroes, villains, and side-corners of Marvel lore with a separate continuity focused on darker or stranger character arcs. Its placement helps viewers distinguish this lane from MCU Spider-Man and the animated Spider-Verse.
