The Amazing Spider-Man 2
April 16, 2014 in theaters
For Peter Parker, life is busy. Between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen Stacy, high school graduation cannot come quickly enough. Peter has not forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away, but that is a promise he cannot keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro, emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a film that wanted to be three things at once — an Electro origin story, a Harry Osborn tragedy, and a Gwen Stacy love story — and fully commits to none of them. The Peter-Gwen dynamic is the film's genuine strength, and Andrew Garfield remains a likable and physically capable Spider-Man. But the screenplay fractures under its own ambition, Electro is underdeveloped despite considerable screen time, and the Sony universe-building stitched into the final act dates it badly. The finale earns more emotion than the rest of the film deserves, which makes the squandered potential all the more visible.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 belongs to Sony's Spider-Man film history, separate from the main MCU continuity unless a later crossover explicitly connects it. It explores Peter Parker's world, villains, and personal responsibilities through its own version of Spider-Man mythology. Its placement helps viewers track this branch alongside the MCU and animated Spider-Verse without blending them into one timeline.

'I Would Need It to Be Completely Unconventional' — Andrew Garfield Is Open to The Amazing Spider-Man 3 on One Condition
Andrew Garfield has expressed his willingness to reprise his role as Spider-Man in a potential The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but he has one key condition: the project must be "completely unconventional." This statement suggests that Garfield is looking for a unique and innovative approach to the character and story, differing from traditional superhero narratives. Fans of Garfield's portrayal are intrigued by the possibility of a third installment, especially given the recent multiverse trends in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As discussions about future Spider-Man films continue, Garfield's openness adds an exciting layer to the ongoing speculation.
