Spider-Man 2
June 30, 2004 in theaters
Two years into life as Spider-Man, Peter Parker is burning out — his grades are slipping, MJ is moving on, and he's questioning whether the mask is worth the cost. Into that crisis steps Otto Octavius, a scientist fused to four mechanical arms and bent on completing a dangerous experiment at any cost. Widely considered the gold standard of the Raimi trilogy.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Often cited as the gold standard of superhero sequels, Spider-Man 2 works because it takes Peter Parker's internal conflict as seriously as the action. Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus remains one of the genre's great villains — tragic, intellectual, and genuinely dangerous — and the train fight is still a high watermark for practical-meets-CGI action. Raimi deepens the emotional stakes without losing the character's sense of fun, and the film earns its moments of catharsis by making Peter's sacrifice feel real. The mid-film identity crisis drags in places, but the back half justifies the patience.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Spider-Man 2 belongs to Sony's Spider-Man film history, separate from the main MCU continuity unless a later crossover explicitly connects it. It explores Peter Parker's world, villains, and personal responsibilities through its own version of Spider-Man mythology. Its placement helps viewers track this branch alongside the MCU and animated Spider-Verse without blending them into one timeline.

Maybe I’m nostalgic, but to this day, this spidey movie is the best Spiderman film of all time.
