The New Mutants
April 2, 2020 in theaters
Five young mutants are held against their will in a secret psychiatric facility while their powers are studied — and something inside the building begins hunting them. A horror-inflected genre departure, The New Mutants serves as the final chapter of the Fox/Marvel era and the most unconventional film in the X-Men run.

The film was designed as an X-Men horror movie -- a first for the genre.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The New Mutants spent three years in post-production limbo and was eventually released into empty pandemic theaters, and the troubled journey shows in ways both unfair and accurate. The haunted-asylum premise is the most original structural choice in the Fox X-Men catalog, and the cast — particularly Anya Taylor-Joy — brings genuine commitment. The horror register works in the first half; the third act abandons it for franchise action mechanics that undercut the setup. It is a film that clearly wanted to be something different, and the gap between what it aimed for and what arrived is wide enough to make it interesting precisely because of its failure.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
The New Mutants belongs to Marvel's wider screen history, outside a single clean continuity unless the record clearly connects it to the MCU. It adapts familiar Marvel characters through its own branch of superhero, fantasy, or action storytelling. Its placement helps viewers understand how this title fits the broader Marvel xVERSE while keeping separate continuities from being blended together.
