Spider-Man

High school student Peter Parker gains spider-like abilities after a lab accident and becomes the masked hero Spider-Man — only to face his first great test when his mentor's alter ego, the Green Goblin, begins terrorizing New York. Sam Raimi's 2002 film set the template for the modern superhero origin story.

DID YOU KNOW?
Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002) grossed over 820 million worldwide and helped launch the modern superhero era.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
Sam Raimi's Spider-Man launched the modern superhero era with a sincerity few of its successors have matched. Tobey Maguire captures Peter Parker's geeky earnestness without irony, and the film earns its emotional weight — particularly in the uncle-nephew dynamic and the tragic Green Goblin finale. The practical web-swinging holds up better than most CGI of its era, and the New York setting feels genuinely alive. It's a bit campy and the villainous dialogue occasionally crosses into self-parody, but those are small prices for a film that got the soul of the character right on the first attempt.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Spider-Man belongs to Sony's Spider-Man film history, separate from the main MCU continuity unless a later crossover explicitly connects it. It explores Peter Parker's world, villains, and personal responsibilities through its own version of Spider-Man mythology. Its placement helps viewers track this branch alongside the MCU and animated Spider-Verse without blending them into one timeline.
