Dark Phoenix
June 5, 2019 in theaters
The X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe when one of their own, Jean Grey, starts to spiral out of control. During a rescue mission in outer space, Jean is nearly killed when she's hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. The X-Men must now band together to save her soul and battle aliens that want to use Grey's new abilities to rule the galaxy.

QUOTE
"I didn't mean to. I never mean to."

DID YOU KNOW?
Sophie Turner had to film many Phoenix scenes while simultaneously shooting Game of Thrones Season 8.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The Fox X-Men franchise's final chapter, and a melancholy one — not because the film is especially bad but because it's visibly trying and still doesn't work, which is a harder failure than indifference. Sophie Turner handles the Phoenix material with more seriousness than the script gives her room to develop, and the final train sequence has a physical coherence the series had lost. The alien subplot is an unnecessary complication and the emotional beats between Jean and the ensemble arrive too late to land with the weight they need. A franchise farewell that deserved a cleaner ending and didn't get one.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
Dark Phoenix belongs to Marvel's wider screen history, outside a single clean continuity unless the record clearly connects it to the MCU. It adapts familiar Marvel characters through its own branch of superhero, fantasy, or action storytelling. Its placement helps viewers understand how this title fits the broader Marvel xVERSE while keeping separate continuities from being blended together.
