X-Men: Apocalypse
May 18, 2016 in theaters
Set in 1983, a decade after Days of Future Past, the X-Men face their most ancient and powerful enemy when Apocalypse — the world's first mutant — awakens and begins assembling a new generation of Horsemen. The film introduces younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler into the rebooted Fox timeline.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The weakest entry in the First Class trilogy — Apocalypse himself is a powerful concept that the film reduces to a scenery-chewing villain with an unclear plan, and the scale of his threat keeps the film at a distance from the character work that made the previous two entries strong. The younger X-Men are introduced capably, and the Quicksilver sequence maintains the standard set by Days of Future Past. The Cairo third act is generic in the way the franchise had previously avoided, and the film loses the political dimension that gave First Class and Days of Future Past their edge. A franchise entry that traded what was distinctive about the series for spectacle it wasn't equipped to deliver.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
X-Men: Apocalypse sits in the Fox-era mutant branch of Marvel's screen history, separate from the main MCU unless a crossover explicitly says otherwise. It connects mutant identity, team conflict, and shifting timelines with the long-running X-Men film continuity. Its placement helps viewers track Marvel's mutant storytelling before and alongside the MCU's later multiverse expansion.
