X-Men Origins: Wolverine
April 28, 2009 in theaters
Logan's 200-year history of surviving wars alongside his half-brother Sabretooth is upended when a military program offers him an indestructible adamantium skeleton — and then immediately betrays him. The film charts Wolverine's brutal transformation and fills in the gaps between his origins and the X-Men timeline.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
X-Men Origins: Wolverine had the right bones — Logan's backstory is inherently compelling — but the execution is persistently underbaked. Hugh Jackman carries the film on instinct and physicality, and the early Canadian wilderness sequences suggest a grittier film that got away. What remains is a series of rushed cameos, a wildly mishandled Deadpool adaptation, and action that rarely matches the emotional gravity the story requires. It's not without entertainment value, but it squandered the most promising origin story in the Fox X-Men universe.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
X-Men Origins: Wolverine sits in the Fox-era mutant branch of Marvel's screen history, separate from the main MCU unless a crossover explicitly says otherwise. It connects mutant identity, team conflict, and shifting timelines with the long-running X-Men film continuity. Its placement helps viewers track Marvel's mutant storytelling before and alongside the MCU's later multiverse expansion.
