X-Men: First Class
June 1, 2011 in theaters
Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were arch-enemies, they were closest of friends, working together with other mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.

The film explores the deep friendship between Xavier and Magneto before they became rivals.
THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The Fox X-Men franchise's best origin film — the 1960s Cold War setting gives the Charles and Erik dynamic a political dimension the original trilogy gestured at but never developed, and the performances from McAvoy and Fassbender give the ideological split genuine weight. The film's treatment of the secondary mutants is thinner than the leads deserve, and January Jones is the weakest element in a film that otherwise earns its dramatic ambitions. The Cuban Missile Crisis finale is the franchise's most conceptually interesting action sequence because the stakes are real-world rather than invented. A genuine relaunch that justified the prequel premise.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
X-Men: First Class sits in the Fox-era mutant branch of Marvel's screen history, separate from the main MCU unless a crossover explicitly says otherwise. It connects mutant identity, team conflict, and shifting timelines with the long-running X-Men film continuity. Its placement helps viewers track Marvel's mutant storytelling before and alongside the MCU's later multiverse expansion.
