X-Men: The Last Stand

THE VERDICT

Synthesized from published reviews

The Dark Phoenix and mutant cure storylines are each rich enough to anchor a standalone film — pressing them together into The Last Stand ensures neither gets the space it deserves. The film moves fast and delivers genuine spectacle, including a Golden Gate Bridge sequence that remains visually striking, but the emotional core that defined Singer's first two films is largely missing. Key character deaths feel perfunctory rather than earned, and the mutant cure metaphor — the most resonant idea in the X-Men franchise — is introduced and discarded in the same act. A functional action film that could have been something more.

X-Men: The Last Stand sits in the Fox-era mutant branch of Marvel's screen history, separate from the main MCU unless a crossover explicitly says otherwise. It connects mutant identity, team conflict, and shifting timelines with the long-running X-Men film continuity. Its placement helps viewers track Marvel's mutant storytelling before and alongside the MCU's later multiverse expansion.
