X-Men (2000)
July 13, 2000 in theaters
Professor X's X-Men — a team of mutants who fight for peaceful coexistence with humanity — face their greatest threat when Magneto's Brotherhood targets world leaders at a pivotal summit. The 2000 film launched the modern superhero movie era and introduced Wolverine as one of cinema's defining genre characters.

THE VERDICT
Synthesized from published reviews
The 2000 film reset the template for what superhero cinema could be — grounded, politically legible, and built around actors rather than effects. McKellen and Stewart anchor the film's central conflict as a genuine ideological debate rather than standard hero-vs-villain mechanics, and that choice makes the stakes feel real. It's modest in scope by current standards, but that restraint is a feature — the film earns its dramatic moments because it hasn't burned through all its goodwill on spectacle. It helped prove that superhero films could sell character, ideology, and ensemble tension as much as spectacle.
PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Where this fits in the larger story
X-Men sits in the Fox-era mutant branch of Marvel's screen history, separate from the main MCU unless a crossover explicitly says otherwise. It connects mutant identity, team conflict, and shifting timelines with the long-running X-Men film continuity. Its placement helps viewers track Marvel's mutant storytelling before and alongside the MCU's later multiverse expansion.
